Employers expect a good level of literacy and numeracy and may ask for GCSEs or equivalent qualifications. Employers may ask for a childcare qualification such as NVQ or BTEC. They usually expect some experience of childcare.

Although it is possible to work in a nursery setting without childcare qualifications, most employers recognise that better qualified staff can offer more support for children’s learning.

Generally speaking, though, at least half of the staff must hold a valid childcare qualification at level 2 or above.

It does vary from nursery to nursery but in the main:

• Lots of energy
• Patience, tolerance and resilience
• Flexibility
• Communication
• Creativity
• Empathy

And an understanding of children’s physical, social, intellectual and emotional development

Again, this will vary but typical nursery duties include:

• Supervise and monitor children
• Organize daily activities
• Keep and update records
• Prepare snacks and meals
• Resolve conflicts
• Maintain a hygienic environment.

Nursery staff feel they help to give children that valuable start in life to a good education, helping children to develop their social skills in a safe and a caring environment that promotes learning through play.
