We are looking for an experienced and self motivated individual for a deputy manager position in a term time nursery in Stanmore

Job Description

The role of the Deputy Nursery Manager is to work closely with the manager to ensure all children attending the setting  receive high quality care, are kept safe and are provided with planned and stimulating play experiences which meet their individual needs and support all aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Montessori curriculum.

You will work continuously to make sure that you and the team recognise and deliver the needs for every child. You will share responsibility for planning, organising and delivering the activities and learning experiences for all children. You will create an anti-discriminatory and inclusive environment that supports the team to facilitate the development of children and enable them to reach their full potential. You will take responsibility for working together and translating learning outcomes into daily classroom practise for you

and the team.

Staffing and Leadership Responsibilities

• Overall to assist in the management of the nursery by example to others and thereby promote respect for the role. Nursery staff will learn and perform by how you perform your own role on a day to day basis.

• Proactively contribute to effective team working and foster open and honest communication amongst all employees within the nursery.

• Assist the Manager in ensuring that staff follow the requirements of the nursery operational plan, long and medium term plans plus the requirements of Ofsted.

• To help ensure the provision is of the highest quality at all times and strives to attain the highest ratings such as OFSTED “outstanding”.

• To help ensure that staff adhere to nursery policies, objectives and code of conduct.

• To help to ensure that first and foremost, safeguarding children and staff is our utmost priority.

• Actively encourage the continual development of best practice and maintain our reputation for providing exemplary practice.

• To keep abreast of changes in legislation or best practice which may influence procedures and policies.

• Ensure that the appropriate recognition is given to staff who perform well or carry out their duties over and above what is expected.

• Commit to on-going personal learning and development and attend on and off-the-job training.

• Attend networking meetings both local authority and other 3rd party organisations.

• Work in partnership with early years professionals and agencies, for example Health Visitors and SEN services.

• To support nursery assistants, students and volunteers.

• To ensure the correct staffing levels at all times providing a weekly rota that covers ratio requirements and staff breaks, absences or training.

• Liaise with the Manager and Owner on HR related issues.

• Within reason comply with requests to work outside normal hours, for example to cover if staff are absent and perform any other duties as reasonably requested by the management.

Operational Responsibilities

• To undertake weekly and termly planning responsibilities.

• Assist the Manager / DSL in responsibility for benchmarking, updating and communication all key policies and procedures to your staff.

• Help to ensure that the nursery’s procedures on child safeguarding are adhered to by liaising with the Designated Safeguarding Lead and local services as required.

• To work with the SENCO to ensure all children with SEN or any additional needs have up-to-date plans in place that are implemented and followed by all staff.

• Ensure the highest standard of safety and security within the nursery, in particular that security procedures are always fully operational and used properly by all staff and visitors.

• Establish all appropriate emergency procedures, especially fire drills and lock down drills.

• Assist the Manager in all health and safety issues within the nursery, ensuring compliance with the nursery’s Health and Safety Policy and procedures at all times.

• Operate the highest level of cleanliness and hygiene within the nursery.

• Ensure correct and proper use of the nursery IT systems and processes.

• To be “hands-on” helping to deliver a great learning experience for our children and support the team to meet curriculum aims and objectives.

• To be flexible within working practices of the setting, undertaking other responsible duties where needed, such as domestic tasks, preparation of snacks, cleansing of equipment, etc.

• Supporting the Manager to ensure that there is a yearly calendar of events.

Childcare and Curriculum Responsibilities

• Assist the Manager in delivery of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and Montessori curriculum and any other appropriate guidance for young children in accordance with nursery policy

and guidelines.

• To be a lead on arts and crafts, role play, home corner and sensory areas

• Act as a designated key person for an allocated number of children and maintain their learning journeys.

• Manage the observation of your key child’s progress and report on achievements, looking for

progression and continuity alongside the Early Years Foundation Stage and Montessori Curriculum.

• Support the settling of new children into the setting.

• Help to ensure that all staff provide high quality childcare at all times.

• Help to ensure that staff attend to the all-round daily needs of the children by enhancing their physical, intellectual, social and emotional development.

• Ensure staff are supporting children in serving their own food, drinks and snacks and encourage good nutrition and sociable eating.

• Help to ensure that staff assist children with personal care, including changing nappies, assisting with toileting and other associated welfare duties.

• Assist the Manager and Designated Safeguarding Lead in monitoring all child safeguarding /protection issues and accidents to ensure that any remedial action is taken immediately.

• Support the Manager in dealing with accidents and incidents and inform parents.

• Ensure children have adequate and safe access to the garden.

Parent and Carer Responsibilities

• Work in partnership with parents/carers, recognising that parents are their children’s first educators,

and encourage parental involvement in the nursery.

• Welcome new parents into the nursery.

• Attend regular parents meetings and parent/carer events.

• Ensure you and staff know what is going on at home that may have an effect on the child’s behaviour or mood when they are at nursery.

• Ensure staff awareness and understanding of the cultural, religious, ethical or personal preference issues that some parents may have in relation to their child.

Room and Premises Responsibilities

• We are  a “pack-away” setting so staff are required to be physically able to move tables, chairs, toy boxes etc.

Help to ensure that risk assessments for rooms and other areas are carried out in accordance with nursery policies and at the correct time and frequency.

• Ensure the nursery is kept tidy and organised to allow for the efficient use of time and to maintain the high quality standards that we have set as our on-going objective.

• Ensure that resources for the rooms are ordered in a timely fashion and in accordance with nursery budgets and are age appropriate.

• Ensure resources, toys and equipment are organised, stored correctly, cleaned regularly and any breakages reported to the Deputy Owner.

• Ensure any signs pictures or displays that are fixed to the wall are tidy, appropriate and in keeping with nursery standards. Ensure that displays are changed regularly and in line with themes and seasons.

• Ensure everything in the room that needs to be is appropriately labelled.

• Ensure that appropriate signage is displayed correctly e.g. fire evacuation.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

• Assist the Manager in the safety and security of all children, employees and visitors to the Nursery.

• Understand and abide by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

• Help carry out regular assessments to ensure all nursery health and safety procedures are adhered to.

3• Ensure Accident and Incident books are maintained correctly.

• Ensure that room and garden risk assessments are carried out as required.

• Ensure staff and parents adhere to the policies relating to phones, cameras and other media.

• Ensure data protection legislation is adhered to.

Paperwork and Administration

The Deputy Manager’s role is to help to ensure that paperwork and documentation that is required for the successful operation of the nursery is benchmarked, maintained and communicated to staff. Much of this paperwork is statutory and regulated by Ofsted, so is an essential part of what is required. Paperwork has to be up to date, neat and tidy, correctly spelt and well written. If there are any reservations about staff’s abilities with paperwork then please ensure their work is checked by another suitable team member.

Appraisal and Review

Your role will be appraised on a regular basis by the Manager during which your performance will be reviewed and assessed in accordance with personal and nursery aims and objectives. Whilst the role description contains specific responsibilities, it is expected that you will have a high degree of integrity and initiative in your managing your own performance and self-evaluation.
